Seminar “Using Authentic Materials and Open Internet Resources in Language Teaching”

EHU Foreign Languages Center has organized a seminar “Using Authentic Materials and Open Internet Resources in Language Teaching”, with the trainer Vilma Bačkiūtė, Chief Officer, Lower and Upper Secondary Education Division, Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania on 27th of February 2014.

The program included two major issues: Using authentic materials in content-based language teaching for adult learners: selecting, adapting and recycling and Using open internet resources: blending language with content.

To be in language- learner’s task.
To give an output – teacher’s task.

A teacher sometimes has double role: not only to teach, but also to discover strategies how to reach a student, what methods to use. This is why it is important to relate particular language to a particular culture and methodology. Authentic materials, those who are not adapted but brought from real life, can perfectly serve for these purposes. Teachers have to design activities themselves with the help of different authentic sources such as videos, news, TV programs, radio, music, extracts from recent magazines, newspapers. This method helps teachers to be in-time with the new generation of students, to choose what particular information can be used to teach language, what range of activities may be organized, to adapt teaching to a particular language and level.
Alongside with the usage of nowadays technologies, language learning is also acquired with the help of language acquisition, music, motivation, use of language in the classes, use of the recent information on TV, radio, internet, ebooks,  games changers, cloze method,  interaction/communication with the native speakers through different sources as such blogs, discussion panels, etc.

In the second part of the seminar teachers have learnt about Academic 2.0 teaching method which considers teaching beyond teaching, learning in social media, with digital technology. New age of technology allows everybody to find virtual materials on theories, methods, and ways of learning. At the same time stimulates teachers not only to give opportunities to develop knowledge but also to make students think and choose.

During last years a lot has changed in internet and its use. Many open online sources became free of charge and open to everybody. Students are very difficult to satisfy because they know a lot. The language teachers are in the best situation ever because they have a lot of possibilities to use technologies and improve their language courses accordingly.

What is MOOC (Massive Open Online courses)? Information everywhere, one way of learning, a choice of different lecturers, levels. MOOC is developed by teachers who value technologies and their integration into teaching. European Commission has raised a task to make universities to develop MOOC and open it for free use.

In this context FLT teachers discussed the above indicated ways of authentic materials use in language teaching, performed a few practical tasks, shared their experience.
Integration of new technologies and open internet resources has been overlooked directly in virtual plane; teachers watched certain videos, short movies with language learning/teaching approach, analyzed relevant sites and online sources, and finally performed a few interactive exercises to deepen their freshly obtained knowledge.
